In this version, also known as 80 Points or 13 Card Rummy, 2 to 6 players compete for points, with each point having a predetermined rupee value. Depending on the number of players, one or two regular decks are used, along with one printed Joker.

The objective is to be the first player to make a valid declaration, winning with 0 rummy points. The opponents’ total points then determine the winner’s earnings.

Basic Rules for Points Rummy

Each player is dealt 13 cards randomly, and the game begins when the first card is put face up in the open deck.

Players take turns selecting or discarding cards to complete their sets and sequences. Jokers can help to finish impure sequences and sets.

Points Rummy Rules for Jokers

In a 13-card rummy game, there are seven Jokers: two printed Jokers and five wild card Jokers. Players can use four of the five wild jokers in the game, while one is hidden beneath the closed deck for all players to view.
In a 21-card game, there are 15 Jokers: 2 Printed Jokers, 7 Wild Card Jokers, and 6 Value Card Jokers.

Card Point Value

In a points rummy game, a player can receive up to 80 points, including the joker. The rummy points table calculations are as follows:

Ace, King, Queen, and Joker: All face cards are worth 10 points.
Numbers 2 through 10: All numbered cards have points equal to their face value. For example, the 2 and 7 number cards have two and seven points, respectively.
The Printed Joker and Wild Joker have no points in the rummy card game points system.

To play points rummy, the purpose is to reduce the number of points in hand to zero by combining all 13 cards into legitimate sets or sequences. Players attempt to arrange their thirteen cards into appropriate sets and sequences. The winner is the first individual to declare 0 points. At the start of the game, each player is dealt a 13-card hand—a closed deck, the Draw Pile, is placed in the middle of the table. The game’s wild card is drawn from the top of the Draw Pile and put at the bottom of the pile. Another card is then selected and placed face up in the center of the table to form the Discard Pile, from which players can discard their cards during the game and draw another from the Draw Pile to replace them.

How are Winnings Calculated in Points Rummy?

Calculating the Losing Player’s Score

When a player makes a legal declaration, the points from the losing player’s ungrouped cards are counted. For example, if a losing player holds three ungrouped cards (7 of Spades, Ace of Hearts, and 9 of Spades), the player receives a penalty of 7+10+9=26 points.

If a player does not complete a pure sequence, the penalty points are calculated by adding the point value of all the cards in hand.
The highest cap for rummy is 80 points. Even if the estimated score exceeds 80 points, each participant can only get a maximum of 80 points.
If a player creates a single pure sequence, the point value of only the ungrouped cards is used to determine the penalty points. Also, sets are only considered once a player has at least two sequences, one of which is pure. So, if a player creates a pure sequence and a set but no other sequences, the value of his ungrouped cards, including any set, will be added to compute penalty points.

Calculating Drop Points in Points Rummy

A rummy player might opt to exit the game. The player must utilize the “Drop” option to abandon the game without incurring significant losses. If you have a weak hand or terrible cards, go for it.

The initial drop occurs when a player does not choose a card from the Draw Pile. The penalty is twenty points.
The middle drop occurs when a player drops out after selecting at least one card. The penalty here is 40 points.
Players are immediately dismissed from the game after missing three consecutive turns. This is referred to as the intermediate drop, with a penalty of 40 points.

Tips for Winning Points Rummy

Discard any high-value cards that aren’t part of a meld or are tricky to combine.
Use the Joker to generate impure sequences and sets.
Establish a required pure sequence that can help minimize penalty points if another player declares.
If you believe you have been dealt a bad hand and are considering dropping, opting for the First Drop is best. The first drop results in 20 penalty points. If you opt for a middle drop or miss three consecutive turns, you will receive 40 penalty points.
Pay attention to which cards your opponents are discarding. You can forecast the type of cards they have and avoid discarding them.
